Vitiligo Treatment

Vitiligo is a pigment disorder in which patches of skin lose their color. The exact cause of vitiligo is unknown, but it is believed to be an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment. While there is no cure for vitiligo, there are treatments available that can help to restore some of the lost pigment.

At the Orchid Super Speciality Cosmetic Center, we offer a variety of vitiligo treatments that are tailored to each individual patient’s needs. We use a combination of topical medications, light therapy, and surgery to treat vitiligo. Topical medications are applied to the affected area and work to stop the progression of the disease and get back part of the lost pigment. Light therapy involves exposure to ultraviolet light, which can also help to stop the progression of vitiligo and restore pigment. Surgery is reserved for cases where other treatments have been unsuccessful. During one form of surgery, melanocytes are transplanted from a healthy area of skin to the affected area.

Another common surgical technique for treating vitiligo is called micropigmentation. This involves tattooing small dots of pigment onto the skin in order to create a more uniform appearance. Another technique is called autologous skin grafting. In this procedure, a piece of skin from another part of the body is removed and transplanted to the area with vitiligo.
